Both the girls’ and boys’ varsity soccer teams made school history last year by making it to the playoffs. This year these teams have new players, new captains and new coaches but still have the same hope as they did the year before.

“I’m new to soccer; my old school never offered soccer,” sophomore Keri Dixon said. “For me, it’s a new game to learn, but I really like it. The hardest part so far is learning ball control.”

The coaches and players are hopeful for a good season and are practicing every day to improve. Coach Watson and Coach Spradley have set a goal for his players to make it to playoffs.

“I think our season will go well and we should have a positive record this season,” junior Hunter Stevenson said. “The day before a game we don’t have a hard practice, but every other day we bust our butts.”

Communication is known to help a team be successful. This year, both teams have stated that their communication has improved.

”I like how we do teamwork as an all-for-one,” junior Patricia Benitez said. “So far this season we’ve gotten better at communicating as a team.”

The captains lead their team in stretches and do the coin toss before kick-off. The captains are expected to make sure that everyone follows the coach’s orders.

“This team makes being a captain enjoyable,” senior and boy’s captain Brandon Medrano said. “We’re all great friends and we have a close bond. As a captain, Coach Watson expects me to be a leader on and off the field, set good examples for the younger players and give it my all each game.”

District games start on Jan. 27 for both the girl’s and boy’s varsity soccer teams.

“The strength of our players and this year’s squad is their willingness to play extremely hard, play through adversity and play selflessly for their teammates,” Coach James Watson said. “[This team’s] unified goal is to play together and play as hard as possible to get the win.”
